FROM HAND TOOLS TO HEAVY MACHINERY: THE AMAZING TRANSFORMATION OF JAPAN FROM FEUDAL AGRARIAN BACKWATER TO A LEADING INDUSTRIAL NATION IN THE INCREDIBLE SPAN OF 20 YEARS-- DR. JOHN MCKINSTRY
Japan was isolated, technological primitive and tightly run by a highly efficient dictatorship when Americans forced their way in to the country and demanded that the country open to the world. After a short period of confusion and indecision, the Japanese completely re-invented themselves with a stunning and breathtaking adaptation of modern life faster and more completely than any nation in history.
The leaders of the late 19th Century Meiji Restoration, as this revolution came to be known, acted in the name of restoring imperial rule to strengthen Japan against the threat represented by the colonial powers of the day, bringing to an end the era known as Sakoku. The word "Meiji" means "enlightened rule" and the goal was to combine "modern advances" with the traditional, "eastern" values. This course will take a look at some of the ways in which that feat was accomplished.
Dr. Mckinstry is Professor of sociology and Asian Studies at Cal Poly 1968-2014. He is the recipient of three teaching Fulbright awards. He was at universities in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Harbin and Sofia, Bulgaria. And is the author and co-author of several books about Asian societies.
