DARWIN'S REVOLUTION AND ITS IMPACT. PART 1 -- GENE KALLAND
Charles Darwin was a revolutionary not because he proposed that life forms had evolved through time, this already being a subject of scientific debate, but because he proposed a theory of how those changes could occur.  Moreover, the mechanism he proposed did not require divine guidance, but rather was the result of the laws of nature.  The consequences of this break with beliefs held for millennia are still reverberating more than 150 years later.

This is a DVD course with lectures given by a Professor of History of Science, and the recipient of awards for his teaching, at the University of Florida.  This is a DVD course with lectures given by a Professor of History of Science, and the recipient of awards for his teaching, at the University of Florida.

In this Part 1 he will describe the pre Darwin ideas about the evolution of life, Darwin's theory and the basis for it, the reaction to his proposal, and the path to its nadir at the end of the 19th Century.

Some of the 12 half hour lecture titles in these six weeks will be; "Theories of Evolution in the 18th Century", "Why Evolution was Rejected Before Darwin", "What's in The Origin of Species", and "The Social Implications of Evolution".

Gene Kalland taught biology for over 30 years at California State University Dominguez Hills, his specialties being endocrinology and developmental biology.  He earned his BA in Biology at CSU Northridge (way back then known as San Fernando Valley State College) and his PhD in Zoology at Indiana University, Bloomington.  He has facilitated DVD courses for LLCC on the Universe, Oceanography, Evolution, and Basic Genetics.

This course has six sessions.  Buying a ticket for this course allows you to attend all six sessions of this course.
