Red Lion Hotel Bellevue
Bellevue, WA

Dan Mageau, Larry Applegate and Aaron McCain from SoilFreeze, Inc. will present an update on frozen soil shoring for civil applications.  SoilFreeze, Inc. (previously known as RKK SoilFreeze Technologies, LLC) has completed more than 30 frozen soil shoring projects throughout the U.S. over the last 17 years.  New projects over the last 5 years have included unique applications of frozen soil shoring, including a frozen soil cofferdam along the Yellowstone River, a frozen soil stabilization block in dry sand for the Reclamation Facility along the Spokane River, zone freezing for a TBM emergency repair 300 feet deep in wet, glacial sand, horizontal frozen soil arch for a box culvert jacking beneath a railroad in Truckee, and frozen soil groundwater cutoff wall for the  mile Alaskan Way Seawall Replacement project in Seattle.  Other projects featured include ground freezing for pump stations, TBM access shaft construction, and ground improvement around TBM access shafts.  SoilFreeze personnel will provide a brief summary of the SoilFreeze technology, with very few equations, and then present key aspects of various shoring projects completed by SoilFreeze.

SoilFreeze will host the bar for beer and wine.

Dan is the lead designer and vice president of SoilFreeze, Inc, a specialty construction company that provides ground freezing for shoring, contamination containment and groundwater cutoff throughout the country.  Dan has designed ground freezing shoring for over 40 projects, including deep shafts for TBM access, tunnel rescues, pump stations, manholes, building foundations, underpinning, and buried lines.   Dan has 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering Alaska, Washington and numerous other states.   He has a BS in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University and an MSc. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Alberta.

Larry has been a part of the construction industry for over 30 years.   He has a construction management degree from Washington State University. He started as an estimator and project control for highway construction projects for a moderate size Arizona company.  Larry then moved to the Seattle area where he became an operations manager for Mid-Mountain Contractors.  Civil construction projects included primarily roads, utilities and earthwork. In 2001 Larry joined SoilFreeze, a specialty construction company that freezes ground for a variety of civil construction projects, including pipelines, tunnels, shafts, pump stations, building foundations/basements, transportation projects, groundwater cutoff and soil stabilization.  Larry is the president and operations manager of SoilFreeze and provides hands-on leadership throughout all phases of the projects.

Aaron McCain is a senior design engineer at SoilFreeze, Inc., a specialty construction company that provides ground freezing for shoring, contamination containment and groundwater cutoff.  Aaron has been involved in the design and construction of ground freezing shoring projects since 2007.  Prior to joining SoilFreeze, Aaron was a senior geotechnical engineer for GeoEngineers for 10 years in Bellingham.  As part of the frozen soil shoring design, Aaron utilizes advanced numerical modeling methods, including thermal, seepage and structural analysis (2D and 3D) of the frozen soil walls.  Frozen soil shoring projects completed by Aaron include deep shafts for TBM rescue and access, soil stabilization outside TBM portals, pump stations, manholes, basement shoring for buildings, and shoring for groundwater cutoff at remediation sites.  Aaron has a Master's degree in geotechnical engineering from Brigham Young University.
