Old School/New School, Featuring Rives Collins and JW Basilo
Storytelling has recently become a phenomenon in Chicago, with dozens of shows happening monthly in bars, theaters, and book stores. However, the city is also home to legendary tellers who have shaped the national scene through decades of working at their craft.
With Old School/New School, we bring these generations together to explore their common ground through a unique, one-night only duet of life experience and interconnected personal stories.
In January, we are thrilled to present Rives Collins and JW Basilo.
Rives Collins is professor at Northwestern University who has sparked the careers of countless professional storytellers through his work and guidance
JW Basilo is host of the original Uptown Poetry Slam at The Green Mill, an award-winning poet, and a nationally touring solo artist.
Doors open at 7pm, with an 8pm start time. Show runs approximately 80 minutes with no intermission. Seating is general admission. Full bar is open all evening, and dining is available before and after the performance.

Rives Collins is a faculty member in the Department of Theatre at Northwestern University where he teaches courses in Theatre for Young Audiences, Creative Drama, and Storytelling. A lover of stories since he could talk, he is featured regularly as a professional storyteller and keynote speaker at festivals, schools, libraries, businesses, and museums, proclaiming that, "Storytelling is at the heart of everything I do." He is the co-author with Pamela Cooper of The Power of Story: Teaching Through Storytelling, soon to be released in its third edition. His audio recordings have received the Parent's Choice Award, the iParenting Media Award, and the Spoken Word Award from the NAPPA. He is a proud member of the National Storytelling Network, and he loves empowering students of all ages to find their own voice as they become storytellers themselves. A long time Illinois Theatre Association member, he is also a Trustee of the Children's Theatre Foundation of America, and an active member of the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. As the immediate past president of AATE, he works with an international community of artists, educators, and scholars to champion the cause of drama and theatre (including storytelling) in the lives of young people. Other interests include folk guitar, cycling, hiking, and making new friends in faraway places. In addition, he is currently bat-shit-crazy for geocaching (his caching name is R.C.Tells), which explains why he can often be found traipsing through the forest preserves these days.
JW Basilo is a guy who never learned how to shut up. He is also a writer, performer, comedian, and educator from Chicago whose work is equal parts poignant and perverse, hilarious and heart-wrenching. His often raucous stage act, a Vaudevillian mash-up of poetry, music, comedy and storytelling, has earned him a reputation as one of the more sought-after spoken word artists working today. Basilo is a National and World Poetry Slam finalist, a PushCart Prize Nominee, Executive Director of Chicago Slam Works, one half of Poetry/Comedy duo Beard Fight, and a company member with Red Theater Chicago. His work has appeared on NPR, CNN, CBS, WGN, in the Chicago Tribune, numerous literary journals, and in hundreds of theaters, dive bars, prisons, schools and comedy clubs across the world. His first solo play, No One Can Fix You, debuted in 2009 to rave reviews in Chicago, Seattle, and New York City. When not on stage or banging his forehead on a keyboard, Basilo teaches writing and performance to brilliant youth and burned-out adults all over the country. All things considered, he's doing pretty well for a guy who failed Creative Writing in high school. Currently, you can catch him every Sunday in Chicago at the Green Mill, where he co-hosts The Uptown Poetry Slam and Mondays at Haymarket Pub & Brewery where he serves as curator and host of The LitMash.
