Bhangra is a traditional form of dance and music which originates from the Punjab region of India. In its purest form Bhangra is a mix of a singing accompanied by music and the beat of a drum known as a dhol. The lyrics are always sung in the language of Punjabi and usually relate to social or cultural issues. Today Bhangra dance is performed all over the world; including Bollywood films, hip-hop music, movie soundtracks, college competitions, talent shows and fitness classes.
CMU Bhangra was formed in 2007. The purpose of this organization is to encourage, advance, and promote the art of Indian Punjabi Bhangra dancing. The team seeks to promote the art of this dance through various performances and competitions, on campus and around the world, and through instructive workshops. They are one of the most sought after ambassadors who promote Indian culture.
