Set against the chaotic backdrop of events in the Middle East, Nadav Schirman's The Green Prince retraces the details of a highly unprecedented partnership that developed between sworn enemies.  In the style of a tense psychological thriller, this extraordinary documentary recounts the true story of the son of a Hamas leader who emerges as one of Israel's prized informants, and the Shin Bet agent who risked his career to protect him.

A Palestinian in Ramallah, Mosab Hassan Yousef grows up angry and ready to fight Israel.  Arrested at the age of 17 for smuggling guns, he's interrogated by the Shin Bet, Israel's security service, and sent to prison.  Shocked by ruthless prison tactics and the Hamas escalating campaign of suicide bombings outside, Mosab agrees to spy for Israel.  For him, there is no greater shame.  For his Shin Bet handler, there is no greater prize: "operating" the oldest son of a founding member of Hamas.

Professors Nuhket Kardam and Jeffrey Bale will join a panel discussion about terrorism following the film, presented in conjunction with the EMIISaries at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Dr. Kardam is passionate about how global human rights norms apply in specific cultures; about working, living, and exploring multiple cultures and multiple identities; and about the nature of self and of identity.

Dr. Bale has been studying violence-prone political and religious extremists for nearly three decades and has published numerous scholarly articles on terrorism, right-wing extremism, Islamism, and covert political operations.

Amy Sands, Executive Director for Research Centers and Initiatives at MIIS, will serve as panel moderator.

Reception at 4:00 p.m. includes food and wine.
