Nimbus Dance Works's 2012 Jersey City Spring Season
Nimbus Dance Works presents the company's 6th annual Jersey City Spring Season, featuring world premiere dance works, international collaborations and popular favorites from company repertory performed at Grace Church Van Vorst in Downtown Jersey City. The NOW Ensemble, a New York-based and critically-acclaimed contemporary music group, will perform at all evening performances. Following the Friday June 8th performance, dancers and friends of the company are invited to 'Dance In Our Midst', a Champagne Reception benefiting the company. 2012 Spring Season honorees are Steven Fulop, Jersey City Councilman, and Elizabeth and Joel Sobo, advocates and supporters of Nimbus Dance Works and the New Jersey field of dance.
Says Artistic Director Samuel Pott, "We've developed a program that combines some of the most cutting edge and experimental work we've ever done along with repertory pieces that have broad appeal to youth, seniors, dancers and non-dancers alike. As the company continues to gain momentum, it's a pleasure to expand our offerings and to bring this diverse and energetic program to our home city."
Nimbus's spring season presents the fruition of a project in development for several years: Samuel Pott's Scarabs draws together an international group of collaborators including Hong Kong composer Samson Young and New York City visual artist Nicola Lopez who has constructed large scale interactive set pieces for the new work. Scarabs draws inspiration from the Franz Kafka novella Metamorphosis and from the Egyptian mythology about the Scarab beetle. Emerging Turkish choreographer Korhan Başaran creates a new work using Turkish contemporary music and exploring the theme of migration. Başaran is known for his unique movement style which combines unexpected and inventive choreographic phrasing with intelligent and socially-relevant themes. The program includes last year's company premiere Danzon by Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruiz, a dance that highlights the elegance and dazzling style of the Cuban music form. On the Saturday matinee performance only, Nimbus presents the company's signature work Memo, integrating a cast of community members alongside the professional dancers. Supplemented by written recollections provided by the audience, Memo conveys a world of collective and personal memory through lush movement and duet sequences.
