The Westerbork Serenade

WHAT: The Westerbork Serenade is a one-person play which tells the true story of Jewish cabaret performers held by the Nazis in the Dutch transit camp of Westerbork. From 1942-1944, some of Berlin's greatest stars performed at Westerbork, thereby delaying their transport to death camps. Most, however, were killed before the end of the war. The play contains period songs, sketches and accounts. The Westerbork Serenade is the title of an acerbic love song about camp life written by Dutch singing duo, Johnny and Jones, in 1944, just months before their deportation to Bergen-Belsen death camp.

WHO: David Natale is a Seattle actor and writer. He began developing the Westerbork Serenade in 1995 as a graduate thesis at the Old Globe Theatre. Over the years Mr. Natale has compiled interviews with survivors and collected songs from Westerbork to expand the piece. He seamlessly plays more than a dozen characters including cabaret director, Max Ehrlich; chanteuse and movie star, Camilla Spira as well as the camp commandant, Konrad Gemmeker. Mr. Natale is being directed by Seattle award-winning actress, teacher and writer, Gin Hammond. This project is being produced with the support of Eclectic Theatre Company and Theatre Artists Alliance, as well as grants from; Artist Trust and King County 4Culture.

WHEN: Sundays and Mondays, January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 at 7:30pm. Free performance for King County residents Monday January 7th at 7:30pm.

WHERE: Odd Duck Studio, 1214 10th Avenue (near Madison) in Capitol Hill.
