Schubert's Winterreise
The Muse Collective presents a performance of Franz Schubert's "Winterreise, " (Winter Journey) on November 20 and 21st in the Muse Collective Theater in Seattle's Central District -1408 22nd Avenue
The seminal song cycle will be sung in German by bass-baritone Dana-Joel Belkholm, accompanied by pianist Gregory Smith with sets and lighting by Jessica Dodge.
This is the second presentation by The Muse Collective, a new Seattle-based arts organization dedicated to the promotion and performance of classical Art Song,
In 1827, Schubert set 24 poems by Wilhelm Muller to music. They tell the story of a young man's heartbreak and his search for meaning as he wanders a harsh winter landscape.. Twenty of the 24 songs will be performed. Winterreise is considered to be one of the most powerful and enigmatic masterpieces of the Romantic period.
Dana-Joel Belkholm studied music and opera in the U.S. and Germany.
Gregory Smith is a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts with a degree in Piano Performance. He specializes in collaborative performance with singers and other performers.
Jessica Dodge is a Seattle-based artist who has painted sets for Intiman, Seattle Children's Theater, Seattle Opera, and other local theaters.
The Muse Collective aims to re-imagine Art Songthe musical equivalent of a poem through the addition of drama, art, dance, and multimedia. Future productions will include an all-Shakespeare program and a Bestiary inspired by animal songs and local artists' animal paintings
