Burn This
Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble (SATE) will produce Lanford Wilson's Burn This from May 9-26 at 8:00PM, Wednesdays through Saturdays, at The Black Cat Theatre, 2810 Sutton Boulevard.

Commissioned by the Circle Repertory Company, Burn This first appeared at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in 1987 with a cast that included Joan Allen and John Malkovich.  Set in the art world of downtown New York, the play explores the emotional isolation of Anna and Pale, two strangers whose lives cross paths in the wake of an accidental death.

Anna is a dancer sharing a loft with her created family, dance partner Robbie, and former dancer turned ad-man, Larry.  She has a science fiction writing boyfriend, Burton, with whom she has a cordial relationship.  When Robbie dies in a boating accident, Anna is devastated.  She and Larry attend Robbie's funeral and are appalled to discover that his relatives have never seen him dance and know nothing about his personal life.  Weeks later as Anna and Larry begin to adjust to life without Robbie, Pale, Robbie's brother, arrives late at night, high and belligerent.  Although Pale is boorish and frightening, he is also desperate to understand the brother he has lost.  Anna and Pale find comfort together for a night.  When she realizes how a volatile relationship with Pale will upset the security of her loft family, she recoils.  Now each member of this chosen family must make a choice; stay put, or take a leap and learn to risk.

Lanford Wilson's early years were about finding a home and family.  He was born in Lebanon, Missouri, moved with his mother to Springfield when his father left, then moved to Ozark, Missouri, when she remarried.  After graduation he sought out his father in San Diego, California, a disastrous experience later chronicled in a play.  From there he moved to Chicago where he discovered a talent for writing dialogue and realized he wanted to be a playwright.  That led him to New York City where he found a home and family in the nascent off-Broadway Movement.  A founding member of the Circle Repertory Company in New York, he saw many of his plays produced in theaters all over the United States and abroad. On March 24, 2011, Wilson died, at age 73.

SATE's performing ensemble includes Adam Flores, Reginald Pierre, Jared Sanz-Agero and Ellie Schwetye.

Directed by Rachel Tibbetts. The stage manager is Amanda Opitz with dramaturgy by William Rauch and fight choregraphy by Bob Mitchell. Lighting design by Michael Bergfeld, carpentry by David Hahn and costumes by Tracey Newcomb-Margrave.

The production will feature original music by I Love You, I Know.  Dottie Quick created all the original artwork.

SATE's production of Burn This is made possible by funding from the Missouri Arts Council, St. Louis Regional Arts Commission and Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation.
