Let There Be Light: The Evolution of Lighting
The Pardee Home Museum will host a series of lectures inviting the public's participation in "The Governor's Decorative Arts Guild."

The series begins with the first event: "Let there be light" and will be moderated by curator Paul Motter, who will give a history of the evolution of lighting from Colonial American through Victorian and Edwardian times. Devices from candlesticks to kerosene lamps to the advent of electricity, with the original heirlooms belonging to this distinguished family, will be featured. While the home--an Italianate Victorian built in 1868--is one of the greatest architectural and historical treasures of Northern California, the contents of this house, home to two Oakland mayors and a Governor of California, contains artifacts and decorative accessories from throughout the world. This ongoing series will feature other important pieces: art, antique furniture, silver, fine china, scrimshaw, and personal items (books, ephemera, letters). Immediately following the lectures, tours will be available and the afternoon will end with refreshments; an array of table hors d'oeuvres; elegant and delicious. Cost of each event is $25 per person and seating is limited, so make your reservation soon!

These offerings to the public are in keeping with the museum's original mission: to preserve and interpret the historic Pardee family residence, including its gardens and collections, for the education and enjoyment of the citizens of Oakland and the greater Bay Area, and for visitors from throughout the nation and world. Call (510) 381-1973 for more information.
