Fiddler Dana Lyn and guitarist Kyle Sanna first met at a traditional Irish music session in New York City ten years ago. They soon discovered a shared interest in classical, world and experimental music, as well as a deep admiration and respect for Irish music. Both are active participants in Brooklyn's eclectic music scene as arrangers, composers, players and improvisers. Their collaborative effort, The Hare Said a Prayer to the Rainbow and Followed the Fox Down the Hole, is reflective of their wide range of musical influences and experience. Traditional tunes, original compositions and improvised intermezzi are woven together to create a musical narrative that is both childlike and sophisticated, and full of unexpected twists and turns.
Dana Lyn's musicality is drawn from a strong classical music background as a pianist and violinist and an equally strong background in traditional Irish fiddle playing. As a fiddle player, she has extensively toured the United States, Canada, Ireland, Scotland and Japan. She has also performed at New York's Town and Carnegie Halls, on the Conan O'Brien Show and Saturday Night Live, and in headlining bands at the National Folk-life Festival, Celtic Connections, the Lotus World Music Festival, the Ellnora Guitar Festival and the Milwaukee Irish Music and Sebastopol Festivals. She has also served as a fiddle music instructor at the Catskills Irish Arts Week and the Augusta Heritage Center at Davis and Elkins College.
Dana performs regularly with Grammy Award-winning vocalist Susan McKeown, noted folklorist Dr. Mick Moloney and flautist Nuala Kennedy, and has also worked with artists such as the Walkmen, Florence and the Machine, and Bill Withers. She was featured on The Raw Bar and Geanntrai, two documentaries on traditional Irish music that aired on RTE 1 and TG4, respectively, in Ireland. Dana's fiddling can be heard on Grammy-winning folk album, High, Wide and Handsome by Loudon Wainwright and on over three dozen folk, traditional and indie-rock records. Her 2004 release, Looking for the Early Opener, combines her traditional playing with her own emerging musical expression, featuring seven original compositions, cross-tunings, and collaboration with a beat-boxer.
Guitarist, composer, and producer Kyle Sanna hails from the artistic and progressive towns of Portland, Oregon and Madison, Wisconsin. His musical inheritance was a 1945 Epiphone guitar, a newspaper photograph of his grandfather trumpeting with Louis Armstrong, and his parents' love for popular music of the 1960's.
Kyle Sanna's music eludes simple categorization. From his introduction to the guitar through rock music to his formal study of jazz and composition to his immersion in the traditional music of Ireland, Kyle is continually forging his compositional language and playing style out of these and other diverse interests.
His arrangements have been performed live by Korean pop superstar Rain, by Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and Brooklyn Rider on NPR's Performance Today, and by Yo-Yo Ma on The Colbert Report.
Kyle holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Oregon and has studied composition at the Université Lumière in Lyon, France. He is a member of Sky White Tiger, The Smooth Maria, Kinan Azmeh's CityBand, and Tall Tall Trees.
