Andrew Solomon & Diversity and Inclusion In Mental Health Mixer
From the National Book Awardwinning author of The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression comes a monumental new work, a decade in the writing, about family. In Far from the Tree, Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so.

Solomon's startling proposition is that diversity is what unites us all. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, with children who are prodigies, who are conceived in rape, who become criminals, who are transgender. While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, the experience of difference within families is universal, as are the triumphs of love Solomon documents in every chapter.

Please Join Us on Monday, December 7th for Andrew Solomon, as part of the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures series.

Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center and its partners support an approach to diversity that is grounded in empowering mental health professionals to become more aware and more knowledgeable change agents by providing engaging and dynamic learning experiences within the community of Pittsburgh.

Our inaugural program offers audience members a unique opportunity to hear from an inspiring, deeply compassionate and meaningful voice; that of well-known and highly accomplished author, Andrew Solomon.

We recognize Mr. Solomon's contribution to the general understanding of mental health issues through his ground-breaking work on depression, "Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression," and his current work, "Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity," this latest book will be focus of the evening.

In Far From the Tree, Mr Solomon looks at the experience of parenting a child who; in some way, may have a different identity than that of the parent. In the end, Mr. Solomon shows how the bonds of the family mean that in some regard all identity is shared.
