The AfroDixieRemixes: A New York City Listening Party

First he recolored the Confederate Flag in a SoHo gallery in 2000. Then he hanged the rebel flag from a noose in Gettysburg in 2004. And recently, for both Memorial Day and July 4th, before and after the Charleston Church murders, multi-media artist John Sims organized Confederate flag burnings and burials across America as a part of his 15 year Recoloration Proclamation. Now, he re-imagines the Dixie song, the anthem of the Confederacy with The AfroDixieRemixes - a 13 years music project that remakes the song Dixie in 13 genres of Black music with collaborating musicians from Florida. In the wake of the recent events in South Carolina, Sims is organizing a national tour of AfroDixieRemixes listening parties with responding poets/artists to spark a national conversation not only about the Dixie song but to engage the complexity of race, identity and cultural appropriation, in the context of Confederate iconography and African American culture.
