ABOUT THE CELIA CRUZ BRONX HIGH SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music is a small New York City Public High School for students who are seriously interested in continuing their music studies while pursuing a challenging academic course of study.  In 2001 the school opened as the Bronx High School of Music and in 2003, at the prompting of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was renamed the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music after the death of the international singing star Celia Cruz who had studied to become a teacher before her career launched her to international stardom.

Students at the school can take advantage of a variety of musical ensembles including various bands, including a jazz band, a string orchestra, full orchestra, piano and several choirs. The mission of the school is to integrate music into all areas of the curriculum with the students utilizing their unique, creative skills to develop varied approaches to successful learning. Prior to its inception, the Bronx was the only borough of New York City not to have a dedicated high school of music. The school enjoys a partnership with Lehman College, City University of New York.

The Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music recently became a partner with Exploring the Arts, an organization created by Tony Bennett and his wife to support music programs throughout the city.

The celebrated Show Choir, under the direction of Lisa Gwasda, has been named "New York City's Best High School Chorus" by the Daily News, Wildlife Conservation Society and the Hard Rock Café. In 2014 they performed in Carnegie Hall's Creative Learning Project's performance of Duke Ellington's Sacred Mass also starring Norm Lewis. In 2012 Marvin Hamlisch wrote a children's book "Marvin Makes Music" with an accompanying CD sung by the Celia Cruz choir. Following Hamlisch's death the students participated in an all-star memorial held at the Juilliard School that included Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Itzhak Perlman, Michael Feinstein, Chris Botti and Aretha Franklin.

Director Lisa Gwasda is a graduate of New York University and CUNY Lehman College and holds both undergraduate and Masters degrees in Music Education. She built the choral program at the school from the ground up.  Ms. Gwasda is a singing member of Essential Voices USA and plays the violin in the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra. She served as a Carnegie Hall Choral Fellow in the Carnegie Hall Choral Institute and is currently a member of the Carnegie Hall Music Educator's Workshop.
