Fernando Aramburu, The end of the Violence in the Basque Country
Spain faces for the first time a chance to end terrorist violence in the Basque Country. However, the complexity of the Basque problem is for many intellectuals something that requires careful analysis to avoid a purely formal resolution.
Fernando Aramburu (San Sebastian, 1959) has addressed in his novels and newspaper articles, the current status of the Basque problem. The desperate coexistence of the relatives of the victims and the murderers, their accomplices, with the fear and shame of the rest. And he has done so without demagoguery or excesses. There is no need, the narrative is eloquent enough. Aramburu has recently won the Tusquets Prize for his novel Años lentos, in which the jury praised "the Dickensian story of a childhood during the sixties in the Basque Country".
