Footloose Presents David Schein in a 3-week residency of performances, reunions, readings and workshops in the Bay Area this October.
These workshops are for performers seeking new approaches to building their own work. You bring something you have written: a poem, story, dream, or song. Even if it's still an idea, a clipping, or a concept of staging; one page or 20, this process will take your original piece exponentially farther.
Hour 1: Warmups to free your body, brain, voice so that you are working with a fluid instrument.
Hour 2 and 3: excercises for monologue, dialogue, story, singing it, chanting it, dancing it, pitching it, trashing it, talking its movie.
Hours 4 and 5: Composing, recomposing, rehearsing
Hour 6: Sharing the work and giving/getting structured feedback
Limited to ten participants.
$100 per day or $175 for both

David Schein is a founding member of the Iowa Theater Lab and Berkeley's legendary Blake Street Hawkeyes in Berkeley. When in Berkeley he wrote for and performed with Whoopi Goldberg, acting as an outside eye for what became "Whoopi Goldberg on Broadway." He worked extensively with Robert Ernst, John O'Keefe, Ellen Sebastian Chang, Guillermo Gomez Peña and John Lefan, Many of his students have gone on to become noted performers in their own right, including Lisa Kron, and Mistress Cleo. He is the author and co-composer of the iconic opera about the Plague in London - TOKENS, A Play on the Plague.
After leaving the Bay Area, Schein went on to direct Free Street Theater in Chicago and to found One Love AIDS/HIV Education Theater in Hawassa, Ethiopia. An award-winning writer, he has performed and directed in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Africa. His monologue Out Comes Butch has been produced by many theaters throughout the USA and his article about making theater in the Ethiopian market, Incident in Awassa, was published in the American Theater Reader, a compilation of American Theater Magazine's best articles over twenty-five years. A book of his performance poetry, My Murder and Other Local News was recently published by Fomite Press. He lives in Burlington, Vermont.
"I come to performance as an actor, singer, playwright, poet and mover. Since 1973, I've built 11 solo shows. Solos have been my way of looking at myself and my world - and of seeing who I'm becoming. Each show has had a unique genesis and style. I've built them from poems, rhythms, stories, improvisations, language flows, characters, moves, songs, from my life, from random snippets, deep scars, big joys, concepts; and the idea that just wouldn't go away."
