SATE presents THE 39 STEPS
Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble (SATE) continues its Season of Mistaken Identity, a three-production season exploring the personas we present publicly and the one we keep to ourselves. Is our private identity the true version of ourselves, or are others perceptions of us reality?

For its final production of the Season of Mistaken Identity, SATE will produce Patrick Barlow's adaptation of The 39 Steps. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance! In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale.

The first adaptation of the play was written by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon for a cast of four actors and premiered in 1995 at the Georgian Theatre Royal. In 2005 Patrick Barlow rewrote the script, and his adaptation premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Barlow's revised production received its London premiere at the Tricycle Theatre. The production transferred to the Criterion Theatre in London's West End in September 2006. It closed after 9 years in the West End, making it the fifth longest running play in West End history. The play had its U.S. premiere at the Boston University Theatre, by the Huntington Theatre Company, in September 2007. Billed as Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, it opened in 2008 on Broadway in a Roundabout Theatre production. The show had its final Broadway performance in 2010 after 771 performances, and was billed as "the longest-running Broadway play in seven years" (according to Playbill.com). The play won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 2007 and the 2008 Roundabout Broadway production won the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and Outstanding Lighting Design. It won two Tony Awards in 2008 for Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.
