COLOMBIA: TRANSFORMED / ARCHITECTURE = POLITICS

Colombia: Transformed/Architecture=Politics traces ten projects by five contemporary Colombian architects: Daniel Bonilla and Giancarlo Mazzanti from Bogota, and Felipe Mesa, Juan Manuel Pelaez, and Felipe Uribe from Medellin. Their visionary and socially conscious works daycare centers, kindergartens, schools, a sport complex, and a library- are mostly winners of architectural competitions and reflect significant social shifts taking place in Latin America today. The ideas of social inclusion and architectural innovation they demonstrate are steadily transforming Colombian cities and the nation.

Thanks to political, economic, and social reforms -in concert with a belief by local politicians in the transformative power of architecture- engaging buildings, convenient public transportation, iconic landmarks, and peaceful plazas and parks are improving the quality of urban space and, in turn, uplifting the spirits and enhancing the lifestyle of inhabitants of the poorest neighborhoods.

Through photographs, slides, drawings, and film footage the buildings and how they are appropriated by the public are explored and celebrated.
