Poetry & Coffee presents: A Discussion of Alice Oswald's book "Memorial: A Version of Homer's Iliad"
Poetry & Coffee presents a group discussion of Alice Oswald's book-length poem "Memorial: A Version of Homer's Iliad" at Astoria Bookshop in Astoria, Queens, NYC.

"Memorial" has been called a "profound reimagining of Homer," "precise and scalpel-sharp," and "an uncompromising rewriting of the 'Iliad,' stripping away its epic narrative to foreground its fallen foot-soldiers."  The poet Edward Hirsch said "Memorial" left him "shaken and speechless."

Indeed, Alice Oswald, in her introduction, tells the reader that this is "a translation of the 'Iliad's' atmosphere, not its story."  We welcome you to explore that atmosphere together.

Poetry & Coffee invites you to read this major achievement from Oswald, whether or not you have previously read Homer's 'Iliad.'  Allow yourself, as the reader, simply to enter the atmosphere that Oswald creates and then bring what is revealed (or not revealed!) to you to the group discussion on October 4th.

Tickets are free but you must reserve one to attend.  All participants are required to read the entire poem prior to attending the discussion on October 4th.  "Memorial" can be purchased at Astoria Bookshop at 31-29 31st Street in Astoria or can be ordered through Astoria Bookshop's online store at http://www.astoriabookshop.com/book/9780393347272.

HOW WE TALK ABOUT POETRY AT POETRY & COFFEE:

You are encouraged to dive in and see what's underneath.  Poetry & Coffee is open to all people with all levels of experience with poetry.  We have people at our discussions who have no experience reading poetry and people who have a deep love for poetry and everyone in between.  All are welcome and all points of view are encouraged and respected.

At Poetry & Coffee, we say that understanding poetry is like understanding a person.  If you slow down, listen, and pay attention to a person, they feel understood.  Poetry is the same.  The mere slowing down and paying attention to the poem IS the understanding of the poem.  Before each Poetry & Coffee discussion, we do two things: 1) We drop what we think we know about poetry and 2) We drop what we think we don't know about poetry.  Every person comes to the discussion with fresh eyes and fresh ears and a very wonderful and enriching conversation ensues.
