In 1990, Paula Eisenstein Baker was lucky enough to find a trunk of music manuscripts by the Russian-Jewish composer Leo Zeitlin (1884-1930), a leading figure in 20th century Jewish Art Music. Palestina is an overture Zeitlin composed in 1929 for New York's Capitol Theatre. Under the baton of Houston conductor Robert Linder, Palestina will have its modern premiere in a concert that includes additional Zeitlin treasures.
The program will also include the American premiere of three of Zeitlins orchestral Yiddish songs performed by Cantor Daniel Mutlu of Congregation Beth Israel and the original version for cello and orchestra of the composers best known work, Eli Zion, played by Houston Symphony cellist Jeffrey Butler.
