Israel in Egypt - George Fredric Handel

We launch our debut season as Commonwealth Chorale with Handel's monumental "Israel in Egypt". Beloved by audiences worldwide for the dazzling breadth and variety of its choral movements, this powerful work contains some of Handel's most vivid writing. Through text painting and the masterful interplay of orchestra and chorus, Israel in Egypt brings us frogs and flies, hailstones and fire, not to mention a memorable horse and rider. Few choral works can match the sweep of this 18th century masterpiece. With drama and stillness, despair and triumph, Israel in Egypt has it all.

The Revelations of Divine Love - Carson Cooman

Performed only twice in Boston, "The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky)" has delighted audiences across the country and beyond since its premiere in 2009. Based largely on the texts of Julian of Norwich, a 14th c. English female mystic, it evokes a landscape of sea and sky. Filled with atmosphere and color, this remarkable oratorio creates a strong sense of mood and place specifically Nantucket, which provided the composer's inspiration for this large-scale work with orchestra.

Dharma Chant - Richard St. Clair

We conclude our season with a world premiere by Boston-area composer Richard St. Clair. Written and revised over a 20-year period, "Dharma Chant: A Buddhist Oratorio in Three Parts" tells the story of a deeply personal search for enlightenment. Based on spiritual texts, including the Buddha's celebrated teachings on lovingkindness, this moving work is both inspiring and uplifting. Weaving vocal lines of counterpoint and canon in a rich tapestry of four-part a cappella, this is an exciting new addition to the choral repertoire and a concert not to be missed.
