PERSPECTIVES ON AMERICAN CAPITALISM -- JIM GROW
As the economic system under which you live, capitalism shapes the marketplaces that determine where you live and work, how much you are paid, what you can buy, what you can accumulate toward your retirement, and every other aspect of a society based on monetary exchanges for goods and services.
In an era of increasing globalization, capitalism has dramatically strengthened its important role inand its influence onthe world economy. It is the system under which a majority of the world's population lives, and it continues to strengthen the links of interdependence between the world's economies.
But capitalism's impact is about much more than money and markets. Indeed, capitalism is every bit as much a social force as an economic one. As such, its impact on noneconomic life has drawn the attention of thinkers outside of economics, as well as those inside the discipline, including some of its greatest minds.
This is a course on DVD, presented by a professor of economic history, about the economic and political thinkers who most influenced America's embrace of capitalism. At each session you will see two lectures on DVD presented by an eminent professor of economic history. Following each lecture Jim Grow will lead a discussion--which you will be welcome to join--about what you and others think about what was taught in the lecture.
You will learn what was thought by and is now said about Voltaire, Adam Smith, Alexis de Tocqueville, Max Weber, Werner Sombart, Joseph Shumpeter, Friedrich Von Hayek, and Ernest Gellner. You will also learn about the expansion of capitalism out of the West and the development of world-wide capitalism.
If you are interested in reading a book that could complement what you learn from the DVD lectures, our presenter suggests: Mind and The Market: Capitalism in Western Thought, Jerry Muller, Anchor, 2003. Jim will provide reading assignments from this book for each lecture to all who enroll in this course.
Jim Grow is a retired entrepreneur living in Cambria. He founded a company that provides management services for physicians in Denver, Colorado. This company has been serving doctors for 34 years and now has 75 employees. He has facilitated three courses on different aspects of capitalism for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Denver.
