Written and Performed by Lori Shantzis

Performed to sold-out audiences, Loved by You is a testament to the enduring spirit and strength of a woman whose childhood messages were about anything but self-love and self-acceptance.  For anyone who has ever put the love of others before the love of self--this one-woman show reminds us all that it is never too late to find true love...within.

Refusing to act her age, a 40-something woman grapples with some difficult questions about her past. She decides the best way to share her story is through burlesque, exposing more than her D cup, and a few sordid details from her crazy childhood. From field trips with her father to skid row to a nearly fatal night in Denny's, Shantzis takes the audience on a wild ride to remember, only barely smudging her lipstick and leaving nary a platinum strand of her wig out of place. Will she take it all off, or just drop enough clothes and dirty laundry to leave the audience wanting more?

This new and improved version of Loved by You is not to be missed on the BIG STAGE of the beautiful Brava Theater.

Lori Shantzis, aka a.Muse, started her stage career seven years ago with a stand-up burlesque act, which dazzled and confused audiences by being critical of the new war in Afghanistan. She has performed Loved by You at UCSB, a.Muse Gallery, The Marsh Theater, Esalen Institute, and The Jewish Theater, and she will be bringing the production to LA,Boulder, and other cities near you later in the year.

Lori was recently interviewed by Padma Maxwell for Project SHE Thrives ( http://projectshethrives.com/) and is the partial subject of a feature length documentary about alternatives to modern psychiatry. She is also the author of a two person play entitled, "Talking to Strangers," which addresses how ill-prepared the privileged are to deal with economic downturns compared with the experts--people who live on the streets and have already dealt with "impermanence" and non-attachment.  Lori has a degree in Creative Writing and Literature from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara, and an MA in Book Arts from Mills College. She currently runs a.Muse art gallery & meeting place where she hosts a variety of fine arts, performance and fundraising events: www.yourmusegallery.com, lorishantzis@mac.com.

Audience reviews:

"Shantzis transforms herself into a wide variety of engaging and provocative characters, playing herself at various ages, her mother, father and friends. She takes audiences on a rapid-fire journey through a life lived in search of love. Shantzis' talents includes dancing, singing and seducing the audience into loving her as she looks for love in all the wrong places, and eventually finds it within."

"Riveting, engaging, brave...not to mention sexy."

"Juicy!"

"Fabulous!"

Conspiracy of Beards is a 20-member a capella male choir which performs exclusively the songs of the legendary poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Inspired by the late performing artist Peter Kadyk and directed by Daryl Henline, the group performs gritty, uplifting renditions Cohen's songs. Since its foundation in 2003, the choir has performed to dozens of enthusiastic audiences around the San Francisco Bay Area. Notable performances include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco City Hall and the Great American Music Hall, as well as appearances on PBS television station KQED, radio stations KFOG and KPFA, and national radio program West Coast Live. The group became an official non-profit organization in 2006; in 2008, the Beards completed their first mini-tour of the East Coast, performing on radio station WFMU and at several venues in the New York City area, including the Highline Ballroom and the Bowery Poetry Club.

Transforming Cohen's simple melodies into complex 4 to 5 part harmonies, their sound ranges from tender to robust. One can hear influences of contemporary, jazz, gospel, barbershop, classical and even doo-wop styles in the unique arrangements by chorus members. Using the genius of Cohen's words, the Beards inspire the audience to ponder personal, political and spiritual life throughout the show, amid laughter and cheers. The songs have real and relatable meaning which affects listeners in an intimate manner. And when sung by a group of sincere gentlemen, it is a rare phenomenon which touches audience members on many levels.
