This evening's entertainment includes two masterpieces of the silent era, and offers the musicians a chance to showcase a wide array of moods and styles through Mark Tipton's original scores. In Charlie Bower's lesser-known comic masterpiece, "There It Is!," a strange character suddenly appears at the Frisbie Home to wreak zany havoc upon its inhabitants, so much so that Scotland Yard is called in! Just when you thought you knew how "bonkers" 1920's comedies could get "There It Is!" takes it even further! The feature event of the night is Buster Keaton's masterpiece, "The General." One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny's fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit and dexterity. Mark's score highlights both the uproarious comedy and the deep human emotion found in this gem, which is listed as one of the 10 greatest films of all time in the authoritative Sight & Sound poll.
