Nicolas Altstaedt, violoncello and Gilles Vonsattel, piano - Mill Valley Chamber Music Society
Program:
Debussy: Sonata for Cello and Piano,  L. 135
Beethoven: Sonata for cello & piano No. 4 in C major, Op. 102/1
Brahms: Sonata for cello & piano in F Major, Op. 99
Schumann: Fantasiestcke, op. 73

"Talk about a meteoric rise. In 2010 cellist Nicolas Altstaedt played the Schumann Cello Concerto with Gustavo Dudamel. In 2012 Altstaedt's suave capture of Bach's Three Gamba Sonatas' elusive beauty could spark a reevaluation of where they tie relative to the Six Solo Cello Suites."
-Lawrence Vittes, (String Magazine)

German/French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt is a versatile artist being equally at home at performing on period instruments, the classical repertoire and commissioning new music.  Nicolas was one of Boris Pergamenschikow's last students in Berlin, where he continued his studies with Eberhard Feltz.

After having won several international competitions and a "Borletti Buitoni Trust Fellowship" in 2009, he was awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award 2010. As a BBC New Generation Artist 2010-2012 he has performed with all BBC Orchestras, at the Proms and the Wigmore Hall. Nicolas has done a highly acclaimed recording of the two Haydn concertos with the Potsdamer Kammerakademie; Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Gulda concertos on the Claves label and a world premiere recording of pieces by Wilhelm Killmayer with José Gallardo. This fall he will play in Wigmore Hall, London; Budapest's Liszt Academy, and Haydn Festival, Esterhazy.

A "wanderer between worlds" (Lucerne Festival), Swiss-born American pianist Gilles Vonsattel is an artist of extraordinary versatility and originality. Comfortable with and seeking out an enormous range of repertoire, Vonsattel displays a musical curiosity and sense of adventure that has gained him many admirers. Recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and winner of the Naumburg and Geneva competitions as well as a Honens laureate, he has in recent years made his Boston Symphony, Tanglewood, and San Francisco Symphony debuts, while performing recitals and chamber music at Ravinia, Tokyos Musashino Hall, Wigmore Hall, Bravo! Vail, Music@Menlo, the Gilmore festival, the Lucerne festival, and the Munich Gasteig. His most recent 2014 New York solo recital was hailed as tightly conceived and passionately performeda study in intensity by The New York Times.
