Requiem for Roadkill

The 17-voice women's a cappella ensemble Sound Circle performs an annual Solstice concert featuring a nontraditional mix of genres and colors, offering audiences an alternative to the holiday-based musical events of the season. This year's Solstice Concert, Requiem for Roadkill. "is a concert about being human," said Artistic Director Sue Coffee. "Our intention is to offer the audience a heightened sense of presence in the natural world. The winter Solstice feels like a natural time to pause and to pay attention. The title work, Requiem for Roadkill, is offered quite literally and with great sincerity as an honoring of animals killed by humans driving fast-moving cars." The piece is a multi-movement soundscape of varied textures and colors, created by Sound Circle. Another major work on the program is Boulder composer Gary Grundei's setting of Diane diPrima's classic Beat poem, Rant, commissioned by Sound Circle; Stephen Smith's setting of Walt Whitman's poetry titled The Human Body ("If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred"), also commissioned by Sound Circle; a setting by Jonathan Dove of the Navajo poem, "In beauty may I walk"; and an eclectic group of songs by artists including Sweet Honey and the Rock, Clem Snide, Natasha Bedingfield, Mavis Staples, Alanis Morrissette, and more.
