Young People's Symphony Orchestra 75th Anniversary Gala

Radio personality Sedge Thomson is Master of Ceremonies.

Young People's Symphony Orchestra, the oldest independent youth orchestra in California and the second oldest in the United States, will celebrate its seventy fifth anniversary with a spectacular gala at the Claremont Hotel Resort and Spa in Berkeley on Saturday, October 22nd. The gala, which is a fundraiser for the orchestra that seeks to raise $75,000 for a new endowment, scholarships and the 2012 Tour, will feature some of the orchestra's current musicians and some distinguished alumni, including Mario Guarneri, Aaron Requiro, writer/producer/filmmaker Aaron Woolfolk ("The Harimaya Bridge"), and Grammy-nominated violinist Jeremy Cohen. Sedge Thomson, host and producer of San Francisco radio station KALW's West Coast Live show, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

In 1935, violinist and conductor Jessica Marcelli founded YPSO in Berkeley at the suggestion of Clarabelle Bell, an amateur harpist and Berkeley resident, who got the idea after hearing a youth orchestra on a trip to Portland, Oregon.

For 75 yearsand countingYPSO has developed the musical talents and skills of students in the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, many YPSO alumni are internationally distinguished musicians and prominent community members. YPSO's list of distinguished alumni include Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead (violin), former Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean, cellist and Juilliard and San Francisco Conservatory of Music teacher Bonnie Hampton, along with Jeremy Cohen, Mario Guarneri, Aaron Woolfolk, and many others.

YPSO, drawing young musicians from all around the Bay Area, is known for its outstanding, professional-sounding performances of challenging classical and new music repertoire, and has played in Carnegie Hall (2000), in China (2006), and in Australia  (2008) at the Sydney Opera House. In June of 2012, the orchestra will go on tour to Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava, playing in paired with local musicians in each city.

Celebrating his 23rd season as Music Director/Conductor, David Ramadanoff conducts 100 YPSO musicians who range in age from 11 to 20 and hail from 28 Bay Area cities in six counties. Ramadanoff, who studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School in New York, and previously served as the Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and Director of Orchestral Activities at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, has had a major impact in raising the level of YPSO's playing during his tenure. He has employed sectional coaches for the orchestra and the pairing of less experienced musicians with more experienced ones, two methods that have consistently improved the orchestra's playing and overall sound and kept it at a high level during his tenure.

The orchestra's mission is to guide young musicians to achieve excellence within an orchestral setting. We provide an educational environment that fosters accomplishment, serves as a cultural resource for the community, and builds future audience by instilling a passion for music. We encourage young people to become exemplary musicians, and young musicians to become exemplary people.
