American Heritage Series - African-American Islam
Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in America and increasingly visible to mainstream Americans in a post-September 11th world.  Islam's diversity within America belies the common stereotype that Muslims are predominantly Arabs.
In actuality, Islam's American adherents are highly diverse with African-Americans being one of the largest Muslim communities in America.
African-American Islam is known of, but is a little-understood aspect of American History. African-Americans have been practicing Orthodox Islam for decades but are often regulated to the margins, even though Islam is an especially major and highly diverse presence within the African-American community with some 2.6 million participants.  The Nation of Islam is often the most visible to the American media and mainstream community, and many people believe that African-American Islam arose with the civil rights and black power movements of the 1950's and 1960's, but in actuality, Islam came to North and South America with the slave trade and only a few thousand African-American Muslims are part of the Nation of Islam.

African-American Islam will bring renowned scholar Dr. Richard Brent Turner to Seattle to lead a journey tracing the roots of Islam in America and it's foundation in African-American history. Dr. Turner is a nationally known author and teacher on the role of Islam in African-American history, culture, and political and social movements.
