Beyond Boundaries:
"Beyond Boundaries" presents three intriguing young partnerships that defy established roles of designers. All three emerged from professional backgrounds in architecture to produce projects that transcend conventional concepts of art and architecture. Their practices share a common interest in client relationships, working methods, and project types that exceed the norms of the discipline of architecture. Many of the works shown will be installations, both temporary and permanent, that use architectural effect as the impetus for design. The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion between the speakers.

Atherton | Keener:
Complex and continually changing systems structure the physical world around us, creating an eternal series of impermanent cycles. We experience and understand these systems through notions of time and change, though it is often not possible to distinguish a beginning from an end. Light, sound, space, heat, cold, aridity and dampness are the facts. Our bodies receive these facts and forge a chronological narrative between first light and last breath. These facts, and the resulting narrative are the subject of investigation for Atherton | Keener.
Atherton | Keener is interested in bringing about constructions that expand the intersection of sensory phenomena and time, creating an opportunity for the unexpected.
Ball-Nogues Studio:
Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues explore the nexus of art, architecture, and industrial design. Their work has been exhibited at major institutions throughout the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum; PS1; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and museums in Europe and Asia. They have received numerous honors including three American Institute of Architects Design Awards.
Ball-Nogues Studio is an integrated design and fabrication practice that creates experimental built environments to enhance and celebrate the potential for social interaction through sensation, spectacle and physical engagement while striving to infuse the matter of the built environment with a downstream purpose. To achieve these results, the firm works with unusual materials, develops new digital tools and applies architectural techniques in unorthodox ways. Sharing an enthusiasm for the fabrication process, Ball-Nogues Studio relates to the built object both physically and poetically, letting the material's properties, limitations, and economic scenarios guide the structure's ultimate form while also developing methods to extend the intertwined boundaries of a material's aesthetics, physical potential and lifecycle.
Their design process is a carefully orchestrated collaboration, mixing digital development with hands-on fabrication research. This is an essential approach given the rapid evolution of computer modeling techniques, CNC fabrication capabilities and exciting material discoveries. Instead of creating distance via digital tools, the firm studies technique in order to adapt to the built environment and move beyond and into the realm of creating atmosphere.
Lead Pencil Studio:
Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo have been collaborating as Lead Pencil Studio since 2002, working in the area of installation architecture and sculpture at the architectural scale. Han and Mihalyo explore spatial conditions in the built environment, construction/demolition, and properties inherent in architecture that influence human behavior.
They recently completed a permanent installation commission resembling a billboard in reverse titled "Non-Sign II" for the new U.S. General Services Administration port of entry building at the Canadian border.
John Boylan:
John Boylan is a Seattle writer, arts activist, and monologist. He curates and conducts a long-running, monthly series of conversations on art, politics, and science at Vermillion, a Capitol Hill art gallery and bar.
