Dettingen Te Deum

London Docklands Singers and the Marcel Sinfonia perform Handel's Dettingen Te Deum and Pergolesi's Magnificat.

Pergolesi's Magnificat reimagines the hymn of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:4655), which is a piece widely used as a canticle in Christian liturgy, especially at Vespers and Evensong. Pergolesi was one of the most important early composers of opera buffa (comic opera) but also wrote sacred music, including a Mass in F and his Magnificat in C major. Richly melodic and imaginative, this is a masterwork of vocal composition which LDS will be performing in Latin.

Handel's Dettingen Te Deum was composed between 17 and 29 July 1743 as a commission to celebrate and give thanks for the United Kingdom's victory at the Battle of Dettingen only a month before. It was first performed, alongside an anthem also composed by Handel for the occasion, on 27 November 1743 in the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace, London in the presence of King George II.

The concert also features the premiere of Andrew Campling's Concerto for Organ, Percussion and Strings with soloist Dr Andrew Parmley.
