Original Music with Ian Ethan (18 string double neck guitar) & Matthew Schoening (electric cello)
Each artist will play individually, and then collaborate on a couple of pieces!

Ian Ethan is increasingly gaining recognition both for his unique instrumental compositions and for the highly original playing methods which are required to perform them! One of only about five musicians worldwide to tackle the double-neck guitar in earnest, he fluidly combines a variety of self-invented playing techniques necessitated by his multi-layered compositions, which, taken together, have begun to establish the instrument's musical validity perhaps more so than the work of any other artist.

He has performed with some of the most respected artists in his genre, including international solo bass icon and innovator Michael Manring and Grammy Award-winning reed player Paul McCandless (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Paul Winter Consort), as well as top-notch classical musicians from the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Most recently, after both were featured nationwide on the same NPR segment ("Here & Now", Dec. 2013), Ian has begun an ongoing collaboration with 4-Time Grammy Award-winning cellist Eugene Friesen (Trio Globo, Paul Winter Consort.) The duo premiered their new collaborative works during two recent shows at the Boston Museum of Science Planetarium, with a planned album and international touring to follow.

Matthew Schoening plays his electric cello through a complex process of live looping. The looping is used as a compositional tool, as opposed to backing tracks to jam on, although there are aspects to many pieces that allow space for improvisation. His music showcases compositional complexity with variety, dynamics, grooves and movement, while being very pleasing to the ear and soul. Most people forget that looping is involved, due to how it is utilized. Often it sounds like there is an entire symphony, and a full band on stage with him.

He has played across the country in such varied venues as the Omega Institute (NY), Seattle Symphony Hall, the Great American Music Hall (San Francisco), and at Burning Man. He has collaborated with Deva Premal and Miten, as well as with Snatam Kaur. What Matthew loves most in life is holding safe space for others, whether it's through his music, consulting, entertaining, or simply serving some of the many Chinese teas he has acquired and shared with people all over the world.
