Vino Vulcanico with Oliver McCrum

18 Reasons wine classes are back! We're inaugurating four months of Wednesday Wine Wisdom with distributor Oliver McCrum, winemaker Ciro Biondi, Bi-Rite's Trac Le and a host of volcanic wines.

This tasting seminar on Southern Italy's Volcanic Terroir will focus on the terroir of Southern Italy, including the grape growing areas of Mount Etna, Mount Vesuvious, and other volcanic appellations within Campania. We will taste through Ciro's wines and other pertinent selections from Oliver's portfolio.

Oliver McCrum:
Oliver McCrum has been importing and selling wine in the Bay area for the last 15 years. With a carefully selected portfolio of strictly Italian wine, Oliver has brought Oliver McCrum Wines to the forefront of the Italian importing business here in California. His portfolio encompasses just over 30 small producers from 10 different regions and has a clear thread running throughout of clean, balanced, and expressive wines made from a whole range of Italy's indigenous grape varieties.

Ciro Biondi:
In 1999 Ciro Biondi, an architect by trade, set forth to rehabilitate his family's historic vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna, one of the most dramatic and interesting place to grow grapes in the world. Working with vines that are between 40 and 100 years old grown on extremely steep slopes in black volcanic sand at around 700 meters, Ciro crafts a fantastically fresh and complex white wine made predominantly from Carricante and a burgundian like red with extraordinary finesse made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio.
