San Francisco Mime Troupe 2012-The Musical!
The Arena Theater is pleased to welcome the original comedy of the San Francisco Mime Troupe back for another all new production, 2012-The Musical! One performance only, Thursday, July 28. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.
A small political theater company, Theater BAM!, finds itself at a crossroads: should they keep telling the stories they feel can change the world (and starve while telling them), or feed at the corporate trough, sell out, and be the mouthpiece for The Man. Tough decision. But before having to make it, they are offered an artistic commission that may save the company; all they have to do is create a new play, "2012 - The Musical!" But is it political? Will it keep with the company's original mission? What's the true purpose of this frivolous production, and who's really bankrolling the thing?
Past productions by the Tony Award-winning company, now in its 52st season, have focused on themes such as election fraud, the banking crisis and genetically modified foods.
More about the Mime Troupe: Founded in 1959, the San Francisco Mime Troupe creates and produces socially relevant theater; their work is political satire and anything but silent. Winner of three OBIE awards and a Tony Award for Excellence in Regional Theatre, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, about which The New York Times stated, "Anyone concerned about the state of global politics -- and about the state of political humor -- should listen to the Mime Troupe's message," creates plays that make sense out of the headlines, close-up stories that make audiences feel the impact of political events on their personal lives. The performance will begin at 7:30 PM with a 30 minute music set under the direction of Pat Moran. The show begins at 8:00 PM. The Arena Theater Bar and the snack stand will be open.
Tickets are $15, available online at www.arenatheater.org and at local ticket outlets. $10.00 youth (17 and under), available at the door.
