The Day We Discovered the Universe --Mark Bonnard

How most of us think about the true enormity and dynamic nature of the Universe was revealed to us only 90 years ago. Physics and astronomy teacher Mark Bonnard will begin by describing the debate between Astronomers Shapley and Curtis in 1920 that concerned the nature of so-called spiral nebulae and the size of the universe. You will then learn about Edmund Hubble, who proved that the Milky Way is only one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. In so doing, Hubble helped settle the debate and showed the way to our current understanding of the dynamic nature of our universe. Your instructor will also show you many of the discoveries made possible by the space telescope named after Hubble.

Mark Bonnard is a retired high school physics and astronomy teacher. He is an amateur astronomer and has been involved in educational programs in high energy physics sponsored by the National Science Foundation at the FERMI National Laboratory near Chicago and The European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) outside of Geneva for over 15 years. He has given numerous talks on various aspects of astronomy and particle physics.
