room: Longer Burning
Pamela Z Productions presents Longer Burning (an evening of violists), the latest installment of the ROOM Series. Three varied and distinguished artists Hank Dutt (of Kronos Quartet), Charlton Lee (of Del Sol Quartet) and musician and technologist JHNO (John Eichenseer) will perform solo and ensemble works for viola. In the tradition of Room Series events, the three violists will each present a solo set, and then all three will be joined by composer/performer and series host Pamela Z in an ensemble finale for three violas, voice, and electronics.
The concert will take place one night only on Sunday, June 5, 2011, 8pm at Royce Gallery, 2901 Mariposa Street in San Francisco. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online through Brown Paper Tickets.
About the Artists:
Hank Dutt has been Kronos Quartet's violist since 1977. He began his musical studies at age 10 in Quincy Illinois. He continued his work under the inspirational tutelage of David Dawson at Indiana University where he earned a Bachelor and Master of Music degree. Directly after his work at Indiana, he joined Kronos Quartet. For more than 30 years Kronos has expanded the range and context of the string quartet and, with them, Dutt has performed thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 45 recordings and he has played more than 700 new works commissioned by or arranged for the quartet. Integral to Kronos' work is a series of long-running, in-depth collaborations with many of the world's foremost composers, including Americans Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; Azerbaijan's Franghiz Ali-Zadeh; Poland's Henryk Górecki, and Argentina's Osvaldo Golijov. Many of the Quartet's specialties were written to showcase Dutt's talents in particular.
John Eichenseer - also known as JHNO - is a nomadic musician, recording artist, and music technologist. Most recently he has been collaborating with Carla Bozulich and Evangelista on their fourth record for Montreal's Constellation label, and toured with Carla and Massimo Pupillo in Europe playing viola and electronics. As a pianist with jazz roots, he has played with Todd Sickafoose's Tiny Resistors, John Zorn's Duras, and Abra Moore. Solo concerts have included SFMOMA, San Francisco's Intersection for the Arts, the Art Authority at South by Southwest, and the X/XX Experimental Music Festival. JHNO released 3 full-length solo CD's, a 12" single, and two albums with John Ridenour as the band SPOOL. His work appears on many record labels, including his own Delicate Ear imprint. Radio appearances include live performances on Italian and Armenian National Radio in Yerevan, where he studied with duduk master Varazdat Hovhannisian. He embarked on extensive busking tours with Levent and Selçuk Duran in Turkey, and CandyCactus (Lithuanian singer Evelina Taunyte) in Southeast Asia. JHNO has written music software for Björk, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Thomas Dolby, and Michael Brook. With Cycling '74 he helped develop Max/MSP, Pluggo, and radiaL. He pioneered the field of live laptop performance over several years of performing with Scott Amendola and Nels Cline in the band CRATER.
Charlton Lee, violist, has performed throughout North America and Europe both as a chamber musician and soloist. He founded the award-winning Del Sol String Quartet, which specializes in contemporary music and mixed-media productions, in 1992 at the renowned Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. He is sought after as an educator, chamber music coach, and jurist, with teaching experience at San Francisco State University, San Francisco School of the Arts, Steamboat Springs and Oaxaca music festivals, and he coaches regularly for Chamber Musicians of Northern California and the Symphony of the Redwoods. Charlton also teams up with his wife, Eva-Maria Zimmermann, to perform duo pieces for viola and piano. He received his Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics from the University of California at Berkeley and his Master's degree in Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
