The fifth and final production of City Lit Theater's thirty-first season, a world premiere adaptation of The Sign of the Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, will begin previews at City Lit Theater on Friday, May 27 and open for the press on Tuesday, May 31 at 7:00pm. The production, directed and adapted by City Lit artistic director Terry McCabe, runs through Sunday, July 3, 2011.
The Sign of the Four, the second Sherlock Holmes novel, centers on Holmes's investigation of a murder by poison dart and his search for a stolen treasure, culminating in a high speed boat chase down the Thames. It is also the novel which establishes the central conceit of the Holmes sagathat Holmes and Watson exist in the same world as the stories about Holmes and Watsonand either introduces or sets in final form most of the essential premises of Holmes's personality: his violin playing, his use of cocaine, his aversion to women, and his condescension toward Dr. Watson's chronicles of their cases.
The Sign of the Four begins previews on Friday, May 27. It opens for the press at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 31. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm, plus two Thursday performances on June 23 and June 30 at 8:00 pm. The show closes Sunday, July 3.
McCabe's two previous adaptations of Sherlock Holmes material, Holmes and Watson and The Hound of the Baskervilles, were both Jeff-nominated in the Best Adaptation category. The cast of The Sign of the Four are Don Bender, Jerry Bloom, Linsey Falls, David Fink, Nick Goodman, Greg Kolack, Drew Longo, Brian Pastor, Ed Rutherford, Andrew Shapiro, Judy Lea Steele, and Shawna Tucker. The designers are Devin Carroll (lighting), Carol Cohen (costumes), Mary O'Dowd (props), and James Ogden (sets).
City Lit Theater is located in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, one block west of Sheridan Road and a block and a half east of the Bryn Mawr Red Line L stop. The 84 Peterson bus, the 147 Lake Shore Express bus, and the 151 Sheridan bus all stop near City Lit. Valet parking is available for theatre customers through Valet Metro, the valet service for Francesca's Bryn Mawr Restaurant. Parking and dining arrangements are also available to City Lit customers through the Edgewater Beach Café, located in the Edgewater Beach Apartments building one block east of the theatre and at That Little Mexican Café one block west of the theater. Patrons should call the theater box office for parking and dining details.
City Lit specializes in literate theatre, including stage adaptations of literary material. Its work is funded in part by the Alphawood Foundation; the City of Chicago Office of Cultural Affairs CityArts program; the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation; the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency; and a passel of individual donors. Tickets to The Sign of the Four cost $25 during the regular run and $18 during previews.
