Hailing from Bahia, the heart of Brazil's African diaspora and one of its most fertile musical regions, Orkestra Rumpilezz combines the power of Afro-Brazilian drumming with brass band arrangements and the dexterity of a big band jazz orchestra. The 20-piece ensemble won the Brazilian Music Awards for Best New Artist and Best Instrumental Group in 2010. Founded by composer/flautist Letieres Leite, Orkestra Rumpilezz presents a rich, textured sound with tinges of Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil, and American jazz seeping through for a unique mélange of sounds.
