Gaining Consciousness: An Evening with Gary Kibbins
Los Angeles premieres!  Gary Kibbins in person!

At the Spielberg Theater at the Egyptian
6712 Hollywood Blvd. (at Las Palmas), Los Angeles CA 90028

In January 2007 Filmforum hosted Gary Kibbins with a variety of new work described at that time as "rich, deep, pleasurable nuggets of filmmaking." Continuing our informal series of shows with work from Canada, Gary is visiting us again from Ontario, with his most recent films in their Los Angeles premieres.  Expanding his ongoing work with new and found footage and his remarkable, dry, and witty texts, Kibbins's new films raise profound questions about the languages used to construct the world, while at the same time having that rare quality of being uniquely, laugh-out-loud funny.

Tickets: General $10, Students/seniors $6; free for Filmforum members

Gary Kibbins is a media artist and writer currently living in Kingston, Canada. He previously taught at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, and now teaches in the Department of Film & Media at Queen's University.   A collection of his essays and scripts titled Grammar & Not-Grammar is available from YYZ Books.

The Unlucky Sailor (9 Unread Chapters of Finnegans Wake) (2010, 36:00, digital)
The Unlucky Sailor attempts to elaborate on 9 chapters from James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake, without the benefits or insights that may have come from having actually read them.

 7 Questions About Bicycles (2009, 13:43, digital)
There isn't a road to knowledge and understanding, strictly speaking, and it isn't a journey. It's probably a result of sitting down, or walking around, or maybe just lots of different voluntary actions.

How to Lose Consciousness (2008, 16:35, digital)
A non-redemptive constellation of religious belief, torture, and meaningless form.
