City Lit Theater will produce Augustus Thomas' Civil War play The Copperhead. The show will begin previews at City Lit Theater on Friday, April 8, 2011 and open for the press on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:00pm. The production, directed by Kathy Scambiatterra, runs through Sunday, May 15, 2011.
The Copperhead begins City Lit's five year commemoration of the Civil War during its sesquicentennial years 2011-2015. In April of each of those years, City Lit will produce a show dealing with some aspect of the war: its issues, personalities, and legacy. Written in 1918, The Copperhead is a play from the early days of American realism in drama. It tells the story of an Illinois man who demonstrates Southern sympathies during the war, even in the face of his son's enlistment in the Union army and subsequent death at Vicksburg. The first half of the play is set in 1861-63 and the second half in 1903. This enables us to see how both the war and its aftermath have shaped his community, while it demonstrates the effects on him of forty years of ostracism.
The Copperhead begins previews on Friday, April 8. It opens for the press at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 12, the 150th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter that commenced the war. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm, plus three Thursdays, April 28, May 5 and May 12, at 8:00 pm. The show closes Sunday, May 15.
Kathy Scambiatterra is the artistic director of The Artistic Home, and is directing her first City Lit show. The cast for The Copperhead are Thad Anzur, Miguel Cohen, Robert Dean, Kevin Gladish, Susie Griffith, Judith Hoppe, Ed Krystosek, Grace Melon, Mark Pracht, Gannon Reedy, Jon Stutzman, and Kate Tummelson. The designers are Matthew Cummings (props), Jess Harpenau (lighting), Ricky Lurie (costumes), Aaron Menninga (sets), and Jeffery Lyle Segal (makeup).
City Lit Theater is located in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, one block west of Sheridan Road and a block and a half east of the Bryn Mawr Red Line L stop. The 84 Peterson bus, the 147 Lake Shore Express bus, and the 151 Sheridan bus all stop near City Lit. Valet parking is available for theatre customers through Valet Metro, the valet service for Francesca's Bryn Mawr Restaurant. Parking and dining arrangements are also available to City Lit customers through the Edgewater Beach Café, located in the Edgewater Beach Apartments building one block east of the theatre and at That Little Mexican Café one block west of the theater. Patrons should call the theater box office for parking and dining details.
City Lit specializes in literate theatre, including stage adaptations of literary material. Its work is funded in part by the Alphawood Foundation; the City of Chicago Office of Cultural Affairs CityArts program; the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation; the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency; and a passel of individual donors.
