Singer, songwriter, and poet Lisa B (Lisa Bernstein) melds captivating jazz vocals with vivid spoken word.

Her heartfelt, sensitive delivery of standards reflects the devotion to lyrics of jazz singers Carmen McRae and Sheila Jordan. In addition, her original songs often with poetic spoken word woven into the compositions echo the lyrical power of Joni Mitchell, the soul-jazz of Gil Scott-Heron, and the evocative focus of Emily Dickinson and Pablo Neruda. Lisa B often combines the two aspects of her creativity vocal interpretation and original spoken poetry in re-envisioned standards, such as "Night and Day/The Cat Goddess" and her swinging medley "Joe Williams Died Walking/Every Day I Have the Blues."
Lisa B's Sound Room debut also christens her new trio of highly accomplished, dynamic musicians:

Honoring the Sound Room's Uptown Oakland location, Lisa and her trio will be performing her song "Holiday in Oakland." Her homemade video for the song went viral locally and was featured in a news segment/interview with Lisa on Christmas Day by KTVU news.

Lisa B's five full-length CDs (released from 1999 to 2011) have received radio play and charting on hundreds of trade-reporter stations and excellent reviews in All Music Guide, Jazz Times, Jazziz, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Philadelphia Daily News, and many other publications. A new record, "Cole Porter Reimagined," is due for release in 2016.

Lisa B is also a literary poet. Two books of her poetry have been published, the chapbook Anorexia (Five Fingers Poetry) and The Transparent Body (Wesleyan University Press). Her poems have appeared in more than 60 literary magazines and anthologies. She has received grants and residencies from the National Endowment for the Arts, Headlands Center for the Arts, Ucross Foundation, Barbara Deming Memorial Fund/Money for Women, and Puffin Foundation.
