The Young Eight Concert in Columbia City
Seattle, WA The Young Eight string octet will perform a classical music concert at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center in Columbia City, 3515 S. Alaska St. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. Their repertoire will include excerpts from their upcoming Benaroya concert, including string octets by Mendelsshon, Shostakovich and Niels W. Gade. The concert will also include the "Psalms" by Patrice Rushen, and Lyric for Strings by George Walker.

The Young Eight is an outstanding string octet of African American musicians from several commended graduate & doctorate music programs throughout the country.  Formed in 2002 by director and Seattle native Quinton I. Morris, the critically acclaimed octet is dedicated to exposing various communities to the arts through classical music.  The concert at Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC) in Columbia City complements this mission during the Seattle visit, which also includes a concert at Benaroya Hall on Saturday, June 25.

Tickets for the June 23 concert are $10. For tickets, please call Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006 or order online at www.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are also available at the door at 7:00 p.m.

The Young Eight has established itself as one of the next generationâ's most dynamic and energetic chamber ensembles, presenting performances in New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Austin. Members of The Young Eight have won individual competitions, performed with the nation's top orchestras, and have given solo recitals around the world.  Members of the current octet include Mariana Green-Hill (violin, Mannes College of Music), Kenneth Jarvis (violin, Indiana University), John H. Littlejohn (violin, Peabody Conservatory of Music), Quinton I. Morris (violin, The Boston Conservatory), Christopher Jenkins (viola, Manhattan School of Music), Dawn Michelle Smith (viola, The Juilliard School), Ryan Murphy (cello, Cleveland Institute of Music), and Tahirah Whittington (cello, New England Conservatory of Music).  The Young Eight is currently in residence at Huston-Tillotson University, Austin & Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.
