Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Naked Dance
Mulitimedia Sonic Art, Naked Dance presents "Dark Matters" with DVD projection!

Ensemble that includes Clarinet(s), Piano and Drums. Music can be heard on Spotify if you search for "Naked Dance" (Stephen Rush/Jeremy Edwards). "It's funky, groovy, out, abstract, and pretty all over the place."

Dark Matter is a record by Naked Dance (Stephen Rush, Jeremy Edwards, Andrew Bishop) that was created as part of Jeweled Net of the Vast Invisible, a University of Michigan MCubed Project. The project was an interdisciplinary collaboration between Greg Tarle (Department of Physics) Steve Rush (School of Music, Theatre and Dance), Jim Cogswell (Stamps School of Art and Design), Brian Nord (Fermilab) along with graduate students Jason Eaton (Computer Science) and Simon Alexander-Adams (Music, Theater, and Dance).

"Jeweled Net of the Vast Invisible is a visualization of the distribution of dark matter in the universe, based on data from a massive billion-particle computer simulation. As we travel through this space we see structures - halos, voids and filaments, which owe their existence to minute quantum fluctuations when the universe was first launched. These structures, amplified by inflation, propagated by sound and intensified by gravity, formed the invisible net that captured the matter that made up the first stars, galaxies and galaxy clusters, the "jewels" that we see as we look out on the universe today."

So-called "chamber jazz", perhaps coming out of the Third-Stream 1960's movement, is an often-overlooked corner of the new music world. The music of Jimmy Guiffre, especially, provides the impetus for this new project coming out of Michigan (USA)  Naked Dance! Combining clarinets (soprano and bass), piano and drums, with a flavoring of children's toys courtesy of pianist Stephen Rush, the ensemble brings a classical sensibility to the world of Free Jazz. In fact, two of the members have doctorates in music composition from prestigious universities.

The music oscillates from the extremely accessible ("Far Away and It's OK is a sheer exercise in the purity of b-minor) to spiky and difficult tunes like "Trancet" and "On the Verge" (both inspired by Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman  with whom Rush has interviewed and collaborated).  Bishop has studied with Guiffre and Rush with Gunther Schuller  both Third Stream founders and pioneers.  Their legacy continues with "Naked Dance!".
