Bharata Natyam Recital

The Bharata Natyam recital is often structured like a Great Temple: we enter through the gopuram (outer hall) of alarippu, cross the ardhamandapam (half-way hall) of Jathiswaram, then the mandapa (great hall) of shabdam, and enter the holy precinct of the deity in the varnam. In dancing to Padams, one experiences the containment and the simple and solemn chanting of sacred verses in the closeness of God. The Tillana breaks into movement like the final burning of camphor accompanied by a measure of din and bustle".

Our repertoire seeks to follow a similar approach where, Aalokam takes you through an exciting adventure with the divine, at times conversing, engaging and getting rapt in its beauty and at others exploring, flirting and courting with its many forms. The tryst with the divine seeks to draw out feelings of devotion, admiration, happiness and sadness and a longing to be blessed, loved and achieve complete surrenderance. The repertoire assembles creative, lively and energetic footwork choreographed by the performers and their guru, interspersed with moving emotional sequences that enthralls the audience with analogies drawn to unique mythological stories and poetic references.
