A Night of Kinbaku: Performance with Nawashi Kanna, Kagura, film by Pedro Cordas and hosted by Graydancer
Devil Mask Society is proud to present a night of Kinbaku film and performance featuring the first ever Los Angeles performance by Nawashi Kanna, Kagura and the Los Angeles premiere of Pedro Cordas' new film JYOWA, all hosted by Graydancer.

THE PERFORMER

Nawashi Kanna & Kagura

Nawashi Kanna is one of the main Deshi of the Grand Master Akechi Denki.

His style derives many of its forms from Hojojutsu ties that show an intricate pattern of elegant ropes in the back, balanced by minimal and clean lines on the front.
His Kinbaku is restrictive and often includes forms of breath control, with the placing of ropes and knots on the upper part of the body.

THE FILM

JYOWA "Rope Stories"

Jyowa is a made-up word created by Yukimura Sensei which merges the characters for "rope" and for "speaking or communicating", hence it can be translated as "communicating through ropes" or "rope stories".

This project was started in Tokyo in 2011 as a documentary film, yet it ended up becoming more of an aesthetic experience that takes the viewer into the unique universe of five of Japan's top rope artists (by order of appearance): Naka Akira, Yukimura Haruki, Nawashi Kanna, Urado Hiroshi and Hajime Kinoko. In each of the the five chapters we can see two people taking a journey into a deep and profound level of communication in which rope takes a very special place.

This will be an early sneak preview of Jyowa, where we will watch part of the full finished movie before almost anyone else gets to see it. Pedro will be present to answer questions and discuss the movie.

THE FILMMAKER

Pedro Cordas

Pedro is an artist, a video editor and an inspiring rigger from Portugal. He was Osada Steve's first student back in 2003, studied with Akechi Denki and Nawashi Kanna, and more recently with Naka Akira. He has traveled to Japan over the years both to continue his rope studies and to work on his art projects.

In February 2011, while shooting other art projects in Tokyo, an idea was born to create a documentary about rope artists, this idea grew organically during the different stages of the creative process into something different that later became "Jyowa". One of his main motivations to do this film was to share the amazingly rich and different types of communicating through rope with the world.
