Voices From the Heart Concert - Everybody Celebrate
Why Did the Sun and the Moon Come to Live in the Sky??

Find out November 20 at the "Voices" Fall Concert, "Everybody Celebrate!"

"Voices from the Heart," the 200-voiced women's chorus, directed by Joanne Connolly will share a much-anticipated multi-dimensional concert including African drumming, a Nigerian Folk Tale, Body Percussion, African-style Puppets, and, even, a String Quartet! Tickets for the 4:00 and 7:30 pm November 20th shows at South Church, 292 State St in Portsmouth, go on sale on November 3rd and will go quickly!

"Last spring I learned a haunting piece based on Pachelbel's famous 'Canon in D,' shares Connolly. "The two coupled melodies, 'There is so much magnificence in the ocean' over the top of 'Waves are coming in, waves are coming in, waves are coming in,' stayed with me. I would put on a recording of the canon with a string ensemble turned up very loudly and just sing all the parts over it……it was exciting, full, beautiful. A few months later I sat watching horrific images of the oil spill in the Gulf, sea animals covered in oil, and fishermen lined up along the coastline helpless to prevent the tragedy from reaching their shores. That refrain of 'waves are coming in, waves are coming in' sang through my head. And so, appreciating and celebrating the ocean and the environment in song and story,  became my focus as I gathered ideas and music for this concert."

"Voices from the Heart" will celebrate, sing, dance and share the Nigerian Tale, "How the Sun and the Moon Came to Live in the Sky" with celebratory highlife songs from Ghana, welcoming songs from Liberia, American songs celebrating the earth, Yoruba songs and songs from South Africa. The audience will sing and clap along. "Voices" will present this multi-faceted show along with world musician, Randy Armstrong; African drumming troupe, Drumamma; Puppet Artist, Nancy Sander; and string quartet members, Lynne White McMahon, Melissa Waterhouse, Augusto Salazar and Victoria H. Myers. There will be song, celebration, drumming, dancing, storytelling, and African style puppets….a show not to be missed!

Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
