Presented by a Panel of Speakers

Speaker: Kris Spickler, PE, Structurlam Products LTD

'The Next "BIG THING" Cross-Laminated Timber'
Kris Spickler PE, Heavy Timber Specialist for Structurlam Products LTD. Kris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, with emphasis on wood structural design, from Fresno State University. Kris has worked in the Engineered Wood Products industry for 25 years, and has focused on Engineered Wood Lumber used in Heavy Timber design and now CLT design.

Not just plywood on steroids but instant multi-story structures without formwork or pouring concrete and waiting for it to cure. The CLT timber system is a multi-layer wood panel system where each layer of boards is placed cross-wise to adjacent layers for rigidity and stability. Kris will discuss how CLT systems are produced; how they accommodate mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems; connections for vertical and lateral loading; and CLT related building code issues.

Speaker: Janelle Leafblad, PE, West Coast Regional Director, WoodWorks

'Introducing CLT: New Opportunities for Timber Construction'
Janelle Leafblad PE, West Coast Central Regional Director for WoodWorks, and building technology consultant in the area of wood technology, design of building envelope components, and construction of historic and contemporary structures. Janelle holds a BS in Architectural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, and a MS in Wood Science and Technology from UC Berkeley.

Janelle will review completed CLT projects that demonstrate a range of applications and system configurations; discuss how CLT can be used under current and future building codes and standards; discuss benefits of using CLT in place of concrete and steel, including structural versatility, prefabrication, lighter carbon footprint and reduced labor costs; and discuss specifying CLT for projects based on an understanding manufacturing processes and product standards.

Speaker: Dennis Richardson, PE. CBO, CASp, West Coast Manager of Codes and Standards, American Wood Council

'Fire-Resistance Rated Overview for Combustible Construction in the IBC'
Mr. Richardson PE, Civil Engineer, former Building Official, past President Peninsula Chapter of ICC, Board Member for Structural Engineers Association of Central California and private sector consultant has been active in building code development, and education; and has authored a number of code changes on simplified seismic design, occupant load determination and egress requirements through intervening rooms.

Dennis will present an overview of IBC fire resistance rated construction requirements which form the basis for understanding fire resistance rational behind larger and taller wood structures. Topic include fire resistance rated wall types required by various types of construction; prescriptive and calculated fire resistance. Presentation will include practical construction details and code requirements for mass timber construction materials.
