(San Francisco, CA – October 29, 2010) Dance Brigade is back at it again! From 1987 to 1997 Dance Brigade produced their annual production of the Revolutionary Nutcracker Sweetie in Oakland. Over ten years, it reached a total of 40,000 audience members and was a beloved community institution. Dance Brigade decided to remount it again starting in 2007 – only this time at the Brava Theater in San Francisco. The restaged production was greeted with a great "hurrah!"
In Krissy Keefer's Revolutionary Nutcracker Sweetie, Clara is an undocumented worker who works for the wealthiest family in town, the McGreeds. Our story opens just as the biggest bash of the year is beginning - the McGreed's holiday party. To the McGreeds' dismay, their wayward gay son, a pink Mohawk-sporting, Che-shirt wearing Drosselmeyer, crashes the party and gives Clara a freedom-fighting Nutcracker doll from South Africa. Together Clara and the Nutcracker go on a journey of self-discovery and realization where they run into a homeless Sugar Plum Fairy, an Angel of Resistance, and a Snow Queen mourning the melting of the Ice Caps. Where else would you find ariel dance, Spy Mice and a magical Under Water World? Why only at the Revolutionary Nutcracker Sweetie!!
The Revolutionary Nutcracker Sweetie uses Taiko, Tap, Modern, Trapeze, Belly Dance, Salsa, Ballet, Bungee, Salsa and Hip Hop to tell its story and address contemporary concerns such as global warming and consumerism with humor and artistry. The production is fantastic for those who are looking for a winter activity but are not in the mood for another year of "A Christmas Carol."
Dance Brigade was founded in 1984 as a professional feminist dance company. Its mission is to engage diverse Bay Area communities and artists in the exploration, performance and presentation of contemporary social issues through dance. In 1998, Dance Brigade began to operate Dance Mission at 24th and Mission Streets in San Francisco. At Dance Mission, they created an affordable 140-seat theater and rehearsal space for San Francisco dancers and artists. They expanded the Adult and Youth Dance Programs to include a full range of dance classes, including Hip-Hop, Salsa, Bhangra, Brazilian, Bollywood, Afro-Haitian, Modern, Ballet and more. In 2004, the Grrrl Brigade was formed as an intensive dance/leadership development program designed to provide high quality dance training, performance opportunities, and a sense of self-empowerment for San Francisco's girls ages 9 to18.
