Freya String Quartet - Listen Locally Series 2015
The Freya String Quartet invites audiences to come out of winter hibernation for its March 28 performance at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall. The highly regarded ensemble will perform Franz Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 76, No. 2, Matthew Peterson's Badlands and Johannes Brahms String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 51, No. 2.

The Haydn piece, known as the "Fifths" quartet because of the succession of falling perfect fifths that open the piece, was composed in 1796 or 1797.  The Brahms quartet was composed nearly a century later in 1873. The second piece in the program was composed by the Swedish American composer Matthew Peterson in 2011.  Although a piece inspired by the rugged beauty of North Dakota's famous geological marvel may not seem the best harbinger of spring, Freya is captivated by Badlands' sweeping musical lines and colorful intonations.

Founded in 2009, the Freya String Quartet is dedicated to performing a wide range of music, advocating artistic evolution, and teaching the importance of classical music in the Pittsburgh area. Both Jason Neukom (violinist) and Jason Hohn (viola) are North Dakota natives.  The two other members of the ensemble are violinist Ashley Freeburn, who was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Arizona, and cellist Katya Janpoladyan, a native of Armenia.

Freya's March 28 concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door, and are available at www.carnegiecarengie.org/ticketing/ .  The concert will be followed by a dessert reception in the ACFL&MH's new Lincoln Gallery. This is the third performance in the Library & Music Hall's yearly Listen Locally Series.
