End of Life Matters -- Kris Kington-Barker
Advance care planning is as important as financial planning even when you are younger. A better time to consider important medical end of life issues is when there isn't a need to make immediate decisions and there is less emotional stress involved. The subject often arises when a close friend or relative dies. To begin advance care planning you can start by considering these questions:

What represents a good quality life to you?

What concerns you most about death or dying?

How would you want to spend the last months of your life?

Some people want everything possible done to delay death. Others don't want dying to be prolonged. Where do YOU draw the line?

Who should make these decisions for you if you can't speak for yourself? Considering and answering these questions for yourself and talking about them with family or close friends is a place to start.

This course is a combination of lecture and self-exploration through experiential exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to examine personal attitudes and values and how to initiate conversations with others about end of life choices if unable communicate for themselves.

Kris Kington-Barker  is currently the Executive Director for Hospice of San Luis Obispo County; a Commissioner for the SLO County Health Commission; serves on the board for the SLO Long Term Care Ombudsman and is a member of ACTION for Health Communities and host for KCBX Central Coast Voices.  She has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration over the past 40 years and has served as a volunteer and board member for many central coast non-profit organizations.
